SASL Interpreter – Belgium Campus

Role Overview

As a SASL Interpreter at Belgium Campus, you will provide interpretation between South African Sign Language (SASL) and English, ensuring effective communication for Deaf students and staff in academic, administrative, and social contexts. This role is vital in fostering inclusivity and equal access across campus life.

Key Responsibilities

1. Classroom and Meeting Interpretation

  • Interpret during lectures, faculty meetings, and class discussions.
  • Facilitate communication in:
    • Faculty meetings with Deaf lecturers
    • Student disciplinary hearings
    • Counselling sessions and consultations
    • Social events and project demonstrations
    • Institutional meetings (e.g., AIT)
  • Provide internal interpretation for Deaf staff as needed.

2. Lesson Preparation and Coordination

  • Collaborate with lecturers and interpreters to review study materials.
  • Act as co-interpreter during class observations.
  • Coordinate with lecturers and management to ensure seamless communication.

3. Support for Deaf Students

  • Identify students at academic risk or facing learning challenges.
  • Work with lecturers and management to address barriers.
  • Provide ongoing support to meet academic needs.

4. Development of SASL Resources

  • Maintain and expand a database of subject-specific SASL signs.
  • Contribute to signed video content for course materials, textbooks, and assessments.

5. Administrative and Examination Support

  • Assist with administrative duties related to Deaf student support.
  • Invigilate exams and tests written by Deaf students to ensure fairness.

6. Institutional Functions

  • Provide SASL interpretation at graduations, open days, career days, and academic openings.
  • For non-academic events requiring interpreter participation as an employee, external interpreters must be hired.

7. Professional Development and Awareness

  • Engage in continuous training and education.
  • Promote awareness of Deaf culture and inclusive practices.
  • Educate the campus community about Deaf issues and SASL.

8. Technical and Administrative Requirements

  • Ensure interpretation equipment (headsets, microphones, etc.) is available, maintained, and functional.

9. Continuous Learning

  • Stay updated on developments in SASL interpretation and Deaf education.
  • Participate in training opportunities to improve services.
  • Promote Deaf culture awareness and provide training to enhance inclusivity.

Candidate Requirements

  • Fluency in South African Sign Language (SASL) and English
  • Knowledge of the SATI Code of Ethics for SASL interpreters
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in higher education
  • Proof of proficiency and fluency in SASL and English
