Job Description

Purpose:
The successful candidate will provide basic, personal patient care, under the direction of the registered nurse to support the team in properly caring for patients in theatre.

Key Performance Areas:
Patient Preparation and Support

  • Ensure patients are adequately prepared for surgery.
  • Provide post-operative care and monitoring.

Assisting with Surgical Procedures

  • Support the surgical team during procedures by ensuring sterile conditions and managing surgical instruments.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of procedures and patient responses.

Infection Control and Sterility

  • Adhere to infection prevention protocols.
  • Maintain sterility in the operating theatre at all times.

Team Collaboration

  • Work closely with surgeons, anesthetists, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Communicate effectively to ensure seamless handovers and continuity of care.

Emergency Preparedness

  • Respond promptly to emergencies during surgery.
  • Ensure the availability and readiness of emergency equipment.

Patient Safety and Advocacy

  • Monitor patient vitals and respond to any changes.
  • Advocate for patient well-being throughout their surgical journey.

Administrative Duties

  • Complete accurate records and reports post-procedure.
  • Maintain stock levels for surgical supplies and equipment.

Requirements:

  • Diploma in Nursing or equivalent qualification.
  • Current registration with South African Nursing Council as an enrolled nurse
  • Experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as an Enrolled Nurse, preferably in a theatre environment.
  • Proven ability to work in high-pressure surgical settings.
  • Strong understanding of surgical procedures and operating room protocols.
  • Excellent knowledge of infection control and sterilization techniques.
  • Willingness to work night shifts, weekends, and public holidays.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Attention to detail and ability to manage time effectively.
  • Compassionate and patient focused.
  • Resilient and able to handle long night shifts.
  • Calm under pressure and proactive in solving problems.
