Job Description

Purpose:
The successful candidate will provide basic, personal patient care, under the direction of the registered nurse to support the team in properly caring for patients in theatre.
Key Performance Areas:
Patient Preparation and Support
- Ensure patients are adequately prepared for surgery.
- Provide post-operative care and monitoring.
Assisting with Surgical Procedures
- Support the surgical team during procedures by ensuring sterile conditions and managing surgical instruments.
- Maintain accurate documentation of procedures and patient responses.
Infection Control and Sterility
- Adhere to infection prevention protocols.
- Maintain sterility in the operating theatre at all times.
Team Collaboration
- Work closely with surgeons, anesthetists, and other healthcare professionals.
- Communicate effectively to ensure seamless handovers and continuity of care.
Emergency Preparedness
- Respond promptly to emergencies during surgery.
- Ensure the availability and readiness of emergency equipment.
Patient Safety and Advocacy
- Monitor patient vitals and respond to any changes.
- Advocate for patient well-being throughout their surgical journey.
Administrative Duties
- Complete accurate records and reports post-procedure.
- Maintain stock levels for surgical supplies and equipment.
Requirements:
- Diploma in Nursing or equivalent qualification.
- Current registration with South African Nursing Council as an enrolled nurse
- Experience
- Minimum of 5 years of experience as an Enrolled Nurse, preferably in a theatre environment.
- Proven ability to work in high-pressure surgical settings.
- Strong understanding of surgical procedures and operating room protocols.
- Excellent knowledge of infection control and sterilization techniques.
- Willingness to work night shifts, weekends, and public holidays.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Attention to detail and ability to manage time effectively.
- Compassionate and patient focused.
- Resilient and able to handle long night shifts.
- Calm under pressure and proactive in solving problems.
