Job Description

The Cluster Lead SSA / Country Manager South Africa is the external face of the client with senior stakeholders including Government, Trade Associations, Media, and Payers. This role supports the client’s Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) business, influencing the external environment to ensure success across the portfolio in South Africa, Kenya, and Nigeria.

Internally, the role champions organizational mindset, drives market access for new medicines and vaccines, and simplifies operations by fostering team ethos and reducing bureaucracy. The position carries direct accountability for growth in Southern Africa, preparing markets for launches, and managing P&L and revenue responsibilities.

Position Responsibilities

External Leadership

  • Develop external reputation & business environment strategy with BUs.
  • Assess market risks and healthcare opportunities.
  • Lead cross-BU market access negotiations.
  • Represent the client in industry boards, advocacy groups, and policy committees.
  • Align commercial and market access strategies across BUs.

Internal Leadership

  • Drive alignment on key issues and resolve BU disputes.
  • Foster diversity, inclusion, and innovation.
  • Champion colleague wellbeing aligned with values of Joy, Equity, Excellence, Courage.
  • Chair the client’s Legal Entity and ensure compliance.

Revenue & P&L Leadership

  • Achieve revenue targets and P&L objectives for SSA.
  • Maximize portfolio performance and daily operations.
  • Identify and pursue business development opportunities.
  • Provide line leadership for Southern Africa colleagues across Health & Value, Corporate Affairs, Digital, Payers, and Commercial Operations.

Organizational Relationships

  • Oversight of Legal Entities and South Africa management.
  • Coordination with Group/BU and enabling functions.
  • Partnership with Medical Group for local coordination.
  • Key memberships in government bodies, pharma associations, alliances, KOLs, and patient groups.

Financial Accountability

  • Projected Revenue: USD 230 Million
  • Team Size: ~300 colleagues across SSA
  • Geographic Scope: Sub-Saharan Africa

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree (Business Management preferred).
  • Minimum 10 years commercial experience in MNC healthcare/pharma.
  • Experience as a Cluster Lead strongly preferred.
  • Broad knowledge of healthcare/pharmaceutical environments.
  • Proven success in government/payer engagement and market access.
  • Track record in organizational change leadership.
  • International/multicultural team experience preferred.
  • Fluent in written and spoken English.
